This week we’re performing Vivi’s Theme from Final Fantasy IX, composed by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu.
The theme belongs to Vivi Ornitier, the shy young Black Mage who joins Zidane and his companions on their journey. At first, Vivi is timid, clumsy, and uncertain about his magical abilitiesโbut beneath that oversized hat is one of Final Fantasy’s most memorable characters. ๐ค
Vivi’s journey becomes one of self-discovery as he searches for answers about where he came from, what it means to be alive, and what he wants to do with the time given to him. Along the way, he finds courage, friendship, and a family among his companions. ๐
His wonderfully quirky theme captures another side of Vivi perfectly: innocent, curious, a little awkward, and incredibly lovable. ๐ฉโจ
And if the melody sounds familiar to Final Fantasy XIV players, there’s a very good reason! ๐
The theme is also associated with Gigi, the mysterious Mammet discovered by Hildibrand during his adventures. Gigi’s appearance is a direct homage to Vivi, complete with the iconic pointed hat, blue coat, shadowed face, and glowing yellow eyes. ๐ช
Hildibrand eventually even adopts Gigi as his son …which somehow makes perfect sense for a Manderville. ๐
