This week we’re taking on one of the most legendary and ambitious compositions in Final Fantasy history: “Dancing Mad”, Nobuo Uematsu’s monumental final boss theme from Final Fantasy VI.
The piece accompanies the final confrontation with Kefka Palazzo and is structured almost like a symphony in four movements. Each movement follows another stage of the party’s ascent through the Statue of the Gods, until they finally reach Kefka himself. ⚔️🔥
Throughout the composition, familiar musical ideas from Final Fantasy VI return, including elements of “Omen,” “Catastrophe,” and Kefka’s own theme, creating a musical finale for the entire game.
And naturally, somewhere between the enormous organ passages, choirs and complete musical insanity… Kefka’s unmistakable laugh is waiting. 🤡
“Dancing Mad” also returned in Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, where Masayoshi Soken arranged the four movements for the battle against Kefka in Sigmascape V4.0. The fourth movement appears during the Savage encounter.
