😄 Sometimes all a song needs is a little more METAL! 🤘🔥
This week we’re doing something a little different with “Smile”, one of the main themes and the ending song of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail.
Originally composed by Masayoshi Soken, with an arrangement by TomoLow and Soken, “Smile” is known for its uplifting melodies, gospel-inspired choir and message of hope, friendship and togetherness.
And well… We have a confession to make. 😅
As much as we love Soken’s incredible work on Final Fantasy XIV, “Smile” has always been one of our least favorite tracks in the entire game.
Sorry, Soken! We still love you! ❤️😂 But rather than simply complaining about it, we thought:
What if we gave Smile a completely different personality?
So we took the original melody, grabbed our instruments and transformed it into an energetic 140 BPM melodic metal and rock arrangement for our FFXIV Bard octet! 🎸🥁
A galloping rhythm drives the song forward, with bursts of double-bass drumming and powerful overdriven guitars carrying the melody. Trumpet and violin add their own character, while clean-guitar arpeggios and fast violin runs bring some welcome contrast.
And because we’re Happy Tunes, we couldn’t resist adding a little extra energy along the way! ⚡🎶
For the video, we chose one of Dawntrail’s more memorable moments: the Warrior of Light and friends preparing a rather unconventional solution to a seemingly impossible obstacle…
BUILD A TRAIN BOMB AND RAM IT INTO THE BARRIER! 🚂💥
Because nothing says friendship, teamwork and optimism quite like turning a train into an enormous explosive battering ram. 😂
Will our metal makeover change anyone’s mind about “Smile”?
We certainly had a lot of fun trying! 😎🤘
We hope you enjoy Smile Goes Happy Tunes, our very own heavy-metal interpretation of this Dawntrail theme!
